WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) released the following statement ahead of the Supreme Court's first day of hearing oral arguments in cases challenging President Donald Trump's authority to impose broad-based tariffs on goods imported into the United States:

"The Constitution gives Congress the clear authority to impose taxes and duties. But President Trump has relied on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), a law that never once mentions the words ‘tariff' or ‘duty,' to impose tariffs on billions of dollars of goods from every country. As the Supreme Court hears these important cases, I'm continuing to do all I can in Congress to stop the President from raising costs on Virginians, harming businesses, and hurting our economy. I urge the House of Representatives to pass my bipartisan legislation that the Senate passed last week to undo Trump's IEEPA tariffs on Canada and Brazil, as well as his global tariffs."

Kaine has been a leader in challenging President Trump's broad-based tariff policies. Last week, the Senate passed three pieces of bipartisan legislation to undo Trump's global tariffs and his tariffs on Canada and Brazil. The votes came after newly released inflation data showed that consumer prices rose in September at their fastest pace in eight months. Kaine signed onto an amicus brief in support of the cases brought against Trump.
